Blog #9 Using web-based resources

I know i have already blogged about this website but as a future educator any program i will be using will definetly be web-based in today's fast paced and technological environment the internet is the best and most modern tool. It is kept updated and is for the most part the most reliable and quickest resource out there. i would definelty use the math website created by James woodland of FSU's math department. It includes many programs for practice as well as programs that explain the material so you get a much better understanding of the subject matter. this website has helped me through 3 math courses at FSU and i dont think i would of done any where as well as i did withouth this useful web-based tool. I will definetly be using this website if i am a math teacher in the future. www.math.fsu.edu/~woodland is the link to this awesome website. As a teacher i will definetly be using excel, it is extremely useful and you can insert formulas so if a incorret value or letter is entered into the box it shows up bold and red which is an immediate indicator and the student will be forced to go back and correct it becaue it will be so distracting. I will definetly be using powerpoint and word to create quizzes and tests for my classes, if it is an inclass quiz i will probably use powerpoint and if they select the wrong answer a slide comes up notifing the student they are wrong and they will have to go back and do the problem until they get the answer correct. My area of expertise would be highschool history or geography so i can include facts and pictures about the subject matter along the way of the lesson plan/scheduale.

Blog #3 Lesson Plan

When creating a lesson plan for my students i would definetly use the technology skills we have learned on power point first of all. It is such a useful program and it is very useful for visual and audio learners so it will only help all the students and me as the teacher create a easy flow but meaningful presentation to get the information to my students across. I would probably go over the presidents or the state capitals in the United States using Powerpoint becasue i would be able to include pictures and other sounds or movies that would display the information i am trying to get across. For the website i am critiquing i am using the one i use now for liberal arts math and all math courses at FSU. it was created by James woodland and has many practice areas of stuff we went over in class by each section. It is a very useful too and has only aided me so far at Florida State i also used it for business statistics. It has many links to other helpful math websites online as well so either way you are goinbg to get the info weither on this website or one that has a link to it on the main page of this site. The website link is www.math.fsu.edu/~woodland. my experience with copyrighted material is very minimal it is only the material i have used for a presentation or other school projects and citations. I would personally deal with these issues as a teacher by just citing every piece of information i use via the internet/microsoft programs to worksheets with pictures on them just so i am safe with my copyright infrigments. I would also just make my students Cite everything as well. you can never be too safe these days

Blog #12

Personally i found everything we did in this class very interesting and will be useful to me for years to come as a teacher. I have never used blog before this class and seeing it in use has proven to me that it can be a very useful tool for teaching and learning. It is a good program and i will probably end up using it in the future as a educator when i get a position. The skills that i would like to go on and learn from here i guess are just to master all the Microsoft programs that we went over in class i definitely have a working knowledge of all the programs we used in this class but i would really like to master them and complete all the skills and tasks available in these very useful educational tools. The way i would go about getting all of these programs and skills mastered is either to take a higher up education technology class or i could even go to a program that teaches you to master most of the programs on your computer. However since i still have two years for my bachelors degree at FSU it would be the smarter decision to take a couple more technology classes to get all of the skills and programs mastered by the time i become a educator so i will be able to use them and only make it easier for me to teach and easier for my students to learn.

Using Twitter Blog #11

I have never used twitter before and despite me thinking that it is completely annoying i guess it is very useful to keep in touch with what people are doing at that exact minute. I mean it is fun to keep up with all the celebrities and bands that i keep track of but other than that it really has no use to me. And no i dont plan on using twitter ever again i hardly even use facebook as it is i just never really got all big into the internet thing except when i am checking weather conditions for surf other than that i am hardly ever on the internet i just think it is a big waste of time when you could be doing something more productive outside for instance. Yes it could be a very useful education tool if used correctly but your students would have so many oppertunities to get off task with twitter becasue there are so many things going on at once on that website. So ultimately if used correctly twitter could be very useful but it could also be the downfall of you and your students.

Personally i believe that presentation power points and other visual tools are only a plus for the student and the teachers. It makes it that much easier for a teacher to present the information and it makes it that much easier for the student to see and understand the information that he or she is being presented with. The graphs and other visual tools that you are able to use in visual presentations only makes the information easier to grab mentally because you are actually visually taking in the information the same time the teacher is explaining it. Since i am looking to teach at a higher level in education maybe high school i would have the students work in groups and come up with their own presentation covering a small section of the whole topic that the class is going over at the time of the assignment. They would than be given evaluation forms for their peers and they would watch each group present so you know they fully understand the information and have a working knowledge of the subject matter.

I did really enjoy the web 2.0 program. I would definitly use that in my lesson plans as a teacher. I think that my students will really benefit and enjoy from the visual tools that web 2.0 offers. It will really help them learn at a quicker and more efficent way. I really enjoyed the wikispace website becasue it will only better a group presentation becasue they can all input info/data and adjust the info accordingly. These will only improve the validity of the information that is presented by the students. I would assign a presentation much like the one we were assigned on wikispace to where they each have their own space but it is all connected through a central home page. I think that all the skills i learned involving Wikispace can only inprove my skills as a teacher. I espically enjoyed the part of wiki that allows you to embed a video of an example of a problem. It would be a great visual tool but would also assist the students who are vocal learners. I truely believe that all the technological tools we have used up to this point only make the learning more efficent and worth while.

After thinking about it for a couple minutes i really cant decided if the internet in more useful to students or if it is more harmful to them. Think about it for a minute a student has a up coming essay due or have an essay test, they can simply google the information and be able to copy and paste from so many different sources that it potentially can be untraceable. There are just so many different sources on the internet and you honestly never know if even the articles posted are 100% true you just never really know. However, that same reason makes the internet so useful to a student, it is so easy for them to be able to back up their information or answer with so many different sources of information. Students should have no problem doing efficient research that can be backed up by so many different sources and types or sources.
There are many types of sources on the internet that can help you find trustworthy articles or information. For example at the FSU library website we have the lib search program that goes through the entire paper bound and internet sources that are related to your search topic. Also there is a program called project muse i have only used it once but it was very efficient for finding creditable information/research.
The level and age of students i would like to teach would be late middle school to early high school. I would personally try to supervise the activities of my students on the internet but there is only so much one teacher can do in a class overwhelmed by students. There are also many programs that run through the school servers and monitor the activity on the internet and ban many of the inappropriate websites. Also i am sure with all the advances in technology that there is a monitoring program that shows every screen of your students computers on your screen and you can control their mouse and keep very close tabs on them.

I personally found all the information in chapter 7 to be very useful and interesting. The level of technological knowledge to use these programs as a teacher must be that of above average but also i believe that the students being taught with all this technology must also be of a higher level or age. To get a young child to even understand and be able to make a concept map on inspiration would be quite the challenge but someone older and more technology savvy would be able to do it in a quick minute. I would have to say that i would encourage my students who hopefully will be around the age of a late middle schooler or that of a early high schooler. Using a program such as inspiration makes it so much easier to make a concept map and will only help a student become very organized and more of a visual learner. Students that do these sort of visual layouts make it easier on themselves because they can actually see the way all of the concepts on the map relate to each other and can potentially make the writing or thinking process a lot easier for that individual. Without a doubt the skills and knowledge that i picked up from mastering the program inspiration will help me greatly in my career as a teacher and will only make it easier to relate and help my students learn in more of an efficient and time friendly manner. And its not even the concentration on the program inspiration because if you truely come to know how to use the new technology of today you are only at an advantage compared to your competition in school as well as the ever changing job market.

Inspiration Blog

Using MS Word

I have personally had alot of previous experience with all microsoft office products and Microsoft word is the one i have spent the most time. It is a very useful tool that can make anything from doing a flyer or invitation to writing a research paper for an english class. All of the teachers i have had up to this point have all been very savy with using powerpoint and projectors so i have also been exposed on the usefullness of it from the teaching prospective.
I would like to take out from this class all the stkills necessary to be completely effecient when using any program associated with Microsoft word. It would be very useful for me to use if and when i become a teacher i hope it will be a good way to display information and make it easy and fun for them to learn.

I personally believe that technology and the classroom if used correctly can exponentially increase the amount of knowledge that can be consumed by the students but also be taught more efficiently by the teacher or professor. I have personally had a lot of hands-on-experience with technology in the classroom. I remember in high school they offered several kinds of computer and technology related classes for example i took business technology three times, at different levels of intensity of course. They also offered computer programing and several digital design courses. The digital design courses enabled me to get a scholarship with now covers my full tuition at FSU. So from my point of view technology in the classrooms has only effected me in a very positive and constructive way.
When i become a teacher i will definitely incorporate a lot of technology which will make it easier for the students. I am sure that by the time i step into my career technology will have doubled so there will still be a lot of things regarding technology that i will have to keep up with the fast pace of technology. I just hope to learn the most about windows in this class because i use a Mac and every computer i have seen at a teachers desk has run on windows. So i just hope to become fluent in the language of technology to further my value as a educator of the youth.

MS Word creates a blog posting?

I do not like posting blogs at all!!

Blog Journal #0 EME2040

Luckly for me i have alot of previous knowledge with technology. At my highschool i completed every busniness computer and computer programing courses they had to offer. The schlorship i recieved to attend Florida State is from all the completed courses i have in technology. I also took the CGS course last year as a freshman so i am very good with Windows even though i am a MAC person and think they have the upper hand on HP and Windows. I like using computers for useful things like checking the surf and watching surfing videos from around the world.
What i would like to take from this education technology couse is that after I would like to be able to use excel better that is the only microsoft office program that i am not atleast decent at. I would also like to be able to do podcasts and other helpful things on the computer for whan i become a teacher becasue if you know how to utilize it technology can make any job a whole lot easier in my opinion. I have never had a blog or a twitter and although i dont like the programs i think they can be very useful in the right situations so i would also like to become alittle more acquainted with these modern technologys.
I learned alot more about myself from the first class than i initally expected. I learned that my learning is based on visual and hand-on experiences. I am a decent learner with verbal teaching but it is planted in my brain if i actually see it or take part in it. Either way if i work at it hard enough i learn the material so i can honestly learn verbally or visually. I think it all depends on the motivation of the student and their desire to become further educated.
